Land Clearing for Bushfire Prevention

A gorse control program was undertaken across two properties north of the Cudlee Creek fire scar. The Hills and Fleurieu Landscape Board came on board to control this noxious weed and to reduce the great fire risk to the town of Birdwood.

By reducing the standing elevated fuel structure (predominantly gorse and blackberry weeds) to the ground level across approximately 6 hectares of land at Birdwood, we help to mitigate further risk, since the initial treatment strategy of “mechanical mulching” reduces both bushfire risk and increases the opportunity to follow up and manage the noxious weeds with chemical spraying, further mechanical treatments (slashing), grazing or burning.
